A Real Pandora’s Box of Psychological Intrigue

Four Roman Catholic priests have been relieved of their religious duties and ordered to attend psychiatric evaluation and group therapy, at a retreat home owned by the Archdiocese. These priests are being kept away from the general population, because of their crimes committed against their faith.

The therapist, who has been ordered to organize these sessions, believes that these men of the cloth all need to come to terms and face their problems in the cold light of day.

However, it doesn’t take long for this entire small assembly to begin to evolve into nothing more than a parlor game for three of the veteran priests, who are in attendance. But for the one young, remaining priest, who rounds out this rowdy group, his feelings are that his entire life may come crashing in on him at any moment.

As the therapist tires of these mind games and calls an end to the day’s session, the priests are left on their own to explore their past sins.  It is in these dark moments that follow, that the real truths about them and their sordid crimes begin to boil to the surface. Like a modern day Inquisition, they start to pry and pull at each other’s stories and lives, until they begin to learn more than they were really prepared to hear.

Heaven in Chains is a powerful psychological drama torn from today’s headlines, peppered with dark comedy and satiric moments, which are certain to make an evening at the theater, truly something to talk about.

A Catholic priest in his late 40’s to early 50’s. Dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts; straight off the badminton courts. Keating is a true zany soul, who loves to expose himself in public for sexual pleasure. Think of a young Alan Alda in the TV series, M*A*S*H.

A young Catholic priest in his mid 20’s. Dressed in priestly attire. Dunn is a newly ordained priest, who is currently wrestling with being Gay. He is much more naive than the three other seasoned priests in his therapy sessions.

A Catholic priest around 45 to 50 years of age. Dressed in casual priestly attire. Though he seems to be a jovial type of fellow, Father Mullen  seems to have a “thing” for doing it with the nuns in his parish. He is the perfect foil for Father Keating’s rapid-fire quips.

A Catholic priest around 50 to 60 years old. Wearing priestly attire. This older priest is currently fighting with many internal demons from his past. He has a solemn, more stoic demeanor.

JOE – The Therapist

A therapist in his late 30’s or early 40’s. Dressed with a tie and a dress shirt. Joe’s a conservative man who has been given the daunting task of rounding up and evaluating this group of wayward priests. A daunting task, indeed.

A student, around 18 years of age. Dressed in casual wear. Tom is a young man who is confused about his sexuality and is not sure how possibly being a Gay man effects his religious beliefs. He comes from an abusive home. NOTE: This character has a brief shirtless scene and is given a Gay kiss on stage.

A young man between 19 and 21 years of age. Dressed in a more hard-edge streetwear. Kind of a loud mouth tough guy, who has no problem with being Gay and is proud of it. Though, by looking at him, you would never know his sexual preference. NOTE: This character delivers a Gay kiss on stage.

A working father between 40 and 45 years of age. Dressed in work clothes. A real middle-class, blue collar loud mouth of a guy. Harvey is Tom’s father. He has no problem saying what’s on his mind.

PASTOR – Father Bennington

A Catholic priest who is between 55 and 70 years of age. Dressed in more formal Priestly attire. He is very reserved and quite formal in his mannerisms. However, he seems easily flustered by any “out of the norm” events.
